Sustainable living is becoming the biggest buzzword in India. Cramped and polluted cities, industrial waste emitting factories, shrinking of green space and the emergence of high-rises which are turning surroundings into concrete jungles have not only harmed the environment to a great extent but are also taking a toll on our health. This has brought the sustainable living into focus and it has become more of a necessity than a luxury. To protect the environment, we need to make modifications in our lives and the best way forward is by embracing the concept of green and sustainable buildings. Many developers like ATS are doing this by bringing ‘green’ features in their projects. The past few years have witnessed a spectacular rise in the number of green buildings across the country. In fact, many government schemes like Pradhan mantra Awas Yojana, Smart Cities Mission have given emphasis to the concept of green buildings. According to an estimate by the Indian Green Buildings Council, by 2025 that market potential from green building technologies will be around a whopping billion. Though the concept of green buildings in India is still at a nascent stage; a lot of work has been done by the government and the private players in promoting this concept. According to a report by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, India stands at the third position among the top 10 countries listed by the US Green Buildings Council in terms of LEED-certified projects. The two countries ahead of India include China and Canada. India is currently home to around 752 LEED-certified projects; however, it is making stringent efforts to increase the number. It has been estimated that by 2022, India plans to have a footprint of 10 billion square feet of green buildings, which will go a long way in easing the threat to the environment and providing people with sustainable living.
Green buildings are meticulously planned and comprise features that are environment-friendly. These include rainwater harvesting, solar energy, reusing water for gardens or flush purposes among others. This ensures that the inhabitants live in green environments and breathe fresh air, which is becoming more of a luxury in many of the metropolises. As great emphasis is placed on planning, execution and construction of the green buildings, these structures are usually expensive. But, within a short span of time command a much higher return on investment. Nevertheless, given the cost of manufacturing these structures, green features are predominately found in luxury projects. But with the environment coming under an increased threat, developers are now bringing these features in mid and affordable housing segments. Today, people are demanding features that not only make living more comfortable but are also beneficial for the environment. The scarcity of water in many cities has led many developers to construct homes that have rainwater harvesting. With parks and open spaces almost disappearing, many people are looking for projects that comprise enough green spaces. Sustainable living is the need of the hour and leading real estate developers like ATS are doing their bit by developing green buildings or equipping their projects with green features.
